Botswana is setting for HBO series,
The No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency

The first major film/TV project to be shot entirely on location in Botswana, The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency is putting Botswana on the global tourism map with North Americans. The new hit HBO series, based on the best-selling novels by Alexander McCall Smith, chronicles the adventures of Precious Ramotswe (played by Jill Scott), the cheerful, eminently sensible proprietor of The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency, located in the Kgale Hill Shopping Center on the outskirts of Gaborone.

The series brings to life the beauty and diversity of Botswana landscapes and people, as Precious, aided by her efficient yet high-strung secretary Grace Makutsi (Anika Noni Rose), travels the country and investigates a variety of cases, helping townspeople solve mysteries in their lives, from missing children to philandering husbands to con-artist scams. Though the seven episode series has completed airing on HBO, you can check out episode recaps on the The No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency video page, go behind the scenes, explore Botswana and its music and meet Jill Scott & Anika Noni Rose!

To celebrate the launch of this new hit series, Botswana Tourism Board North America and HBO co-partnered a consumer promotion in which five winners were chosen to receive an inspirational safari trip for two in Botswana, including a tour of HBO’s filming locations in Gaborone. The five vacation prizes are being provided courtesy of Botswana Tourism Board and our participating trip prize partners: South African Airways, Air Botswana, The Grand Palm, Desert & Delta Safaris, Ker & Downey Botswana, Mashatu Game Reserve, and Wilderness Safaris.
